The Ancient Art of Trance Mediumship

There are probably few arts more misunderstood or misrepresented than trance mediumship or channelling. We could also say that there are few esoteric practitioners more vilified both by the public and other esotericists. The tendency is for some of the latter group to regard anyone who engages in this process as being astrally polarised, deluded or obsessed.

The negative view has been exacerbated by well-known public channellers in the last century whose motives may have been less than worthy. It may be that some of these people werepossessed by demonic entities. Some spiritualists haven't helped either, by approaching the practice in a dangerous and naïve way, inviting any old "spook" to move into their energy field. One must bypass the astral altogether in this process, only invoking those who walk upon the higher subplane of the mental plane and beyond. It takes practice, purification and discernment.

Trance mediumship is a genuine skill that need not lead to possession or obsession. However, there seem to have been very few genuine exponents of the art. Some are deluded by the entity working through them, while others are simply fooling their audience. It is also my understanding that it is a very rare thing for a Master to work through a trance channel and yet many claim this privilege, so it is for the astute to decide for themselves on this matter. It must also be said that too frequent practice of trance channelling can lead to health problems.

Those who are called to trance mediumship (and it is a "calling"), are often resolving a karmic debt that has been incurred in earlier times, such as in Atlantis. Genuine trance mediumship occurs where a close relationship has existed between two people, one incarnate and one discarnate. It is an opportunity for the discarnate to support the teaching work of his incarnate brother in a way that inspires and informs the witnesses, demonstrating as it does the existence of other levels of consciousness. Both individuals are from the same group soul and are in close attunement with each other. The Brothers of Light had hoped that this particular technique wouldn't be needed anymore, because it is archaic. its value lies in demonstrating how two separate modes of consciousness can be seen to cooperate with each other. And as mentioned below it may also have one more part to play in our evolution.

The most well known example of this process was shown in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. His overshadowing by the Christ is an example of trance mediumship in its highest form. If we accept Max Heindel’s explanation of this relationship, it was arranged to allow the Christ, who as a Sun spirit had never incarnated on the planet, to use Jesus’ physical and astral bodies to build a complete set of vehicles and fully incarnate on the planet. He needed a very pure human form  to do so and Jesusprepared his  vehicle for Christ to overshadow.

It can be argued that telepathy is a more effective way of communicating with those discarnate beings who wish to teach or communicate with us. However, we have been informed that trance mediumship has a role to play before and after the earth changes. At that time those who have developed the ability and integrity to use it will be called upon to act as channels for their brothers and sisters.

By then the individuals who have been prepared will have taken their places in certain locations around the globe and will be able to provide a direct link with higher Souls able to provide guidance. After these events people will be separated from each other in far-flung and physically hostile regions. Trance channelling will then allow for teachers who are physically separated from their students or discarnate, to communicate through prepared human vehicles in this way.
